United Way Walk Will Benefit Schools

The Arizona Republic, February 12, 2010 by Jim Walsh

With charities throughout Mesa suffering from a lack of contributions during the recession, the Mesa United Way and Mesa Public Schools are asking residents to pitch in by obtaining sponsors and participating in a three-mile walk.

The pledge walk through downtown Mesa is scheduled for April 10, with proceeds split evenly between the Community Care Fund and school programs that have been cut.

Registration will be at 7 a.m. at the Mesa United Way, 137 E. University Dr., with the walk starting at 9 a.m. Residents can sponsor a participant by going to www.mesaunitedway.org and clicking on Walk United.

Mesa Public Schools is using the campaign to promote civic awareness. Kindergarten through third grade students will draw pictures, while older students will write essays. The winning students will receive cash prizes.
